Guide · Leaving Wix

Leave Wix without losing your Google rankings

Traffic drops after a Wix migration almost always come from the same three mistakes. Old URLs return 404s, images break when the Wix plan ends, and SEO titles and descriptions get lost in copy-paste.

Here's the order of operations that avoids all three.

Free inventory and 3-post preview. One payment per site when you download.

1. Inventory before you touch anything

List every URL Wix serves. Your sitemap at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml links to separate sitemaps for blog posts, pages, categories and products. The free Decamp redirect map tool reads them all for you.

Note which pages actually get traffic (Google Search Console → Pages). Those are the URLs you can't afford to break.

2. Export the content with its SEO data

Each post's SEO title, meta description, slug, publish date and image alt text should travel with it. Re-typing them is where most migrations lose rankings.

Download the images as files. Images on Wix live at static.wixstatic.com and stop loading once the site is gone, even if you pasted them into your new platform.

3. Rebuild, then import, while Wix is still live

Set up the new site on a temporary address, import the content, and check a handful of posts against the originals. Keep Wix running until you're done.

4. Add 301 redirects, then switch the domain

Wix posts are at /post/slug (older ones at /single-post/slug). Map each one to its new URL with a permanent 301 redirect on the new host, then point your domain's DNS at the new site.

If your domain is registered with Wix, you can keep it there and only change the DNS records, or transfer it out after the switch.

5. Tell Google

Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and watch the Pages report for 404s over the next few weeks. Fix any stragglers with more redirects. Rankings usually settle within a month.

Redirect files included: All common hosts. Old links and Google results keep working, and our free redirect checker confirms every one after the move.

Questions

Should I keep my Wix plan for a while?
Keep it until the import is checked and redirects are live. After that, all Wix does is cost money. Your content and images are in your export.

Do I lose backlinks?
Not if each old URL 301-redirects to the matching new page. The redirect passes the link's value along.
