Export your Squarespace blog to Markdown
Squarespace's only export is a WordPress-style XML file, and it covers one blog page. Getting from there to Markdown means running a WordPress-to-Markdown converter, then downloading the images yourself, since the XML only links to Squarespace's CDN.
Decamp reads your published Squarespace site and writes markdown/posts/<slug>.md for every post in every blog and markdown/pages/<slug>.md for your regular pages. Front matter holds title, slug, date, updated, author, description, SEO title, cover image, categories, tags and the original URL. Images are downloaded into images/ and referenced as /images/…
Free inventory and 3-post preview. One payment per site when you download.
1. Export with Decamp
Paste your Squarespace address. The free inventory counts posts across all blogs, your pages and what won't move (store products, events).
Add the verification tag under Settings → Developer Tools → Code Injection → Header (or paste the code into a text block on your homepage), then check the free preview.
Pick where your posts will live (for example /blog/my-post/), pay once and download the ZIP.
2. Drop it into your project
Hugo: copy markdown/posts into content/posts and images/ into static/images. Hugo reads title, date, tags and categories natively.
Astro: copy markdown/posts into src/content/blog and images/ into public/images, then add date, description, cover and tags to your content collection schema.
Eleventy / Jekyll: copy posts into your posts folder (Jekyll wants YYYY-MM-DD-slug.md names; rename with the date field) and images into your passthrough folder.
3. Redirects
Squarespace post URLs look like /blog/my-post. If your new URLs differ, copy redirects/netlify-cloudflare-pages/_redirects into your publish folder (Netlify, Cloudflare Pages) or merge redirects/vercel.json into yours.
Questions
What about galleries, buttons and embedded videos?
Gallery images come across as images, buttons become links, and YouTube and other embeds are kept as HTML, which Markdown allows. Custom code blocks are listed in inventory.csv so you can rebuild them.
I have more than one blog on Squarespace.
All of them come across in one export. Each post's original_url in the front matter includes its blog's path (/blog/…, /news/…), so you can split them into sections.
